Flanagan Named Warrior Defensive Player Of The Week

March 19, 2016
Major League Lacrosse today announced its weekly award winners for Week 9 of the 2014 season, naming the Charlotte Hounds’ Ryan Flanagan Warrior Defensive Player of the Week. The winners are chosen by the league's front office and are based on outstanding in-game achievements. In addition to Flanagan’s honor, Chesapeake Bayhawks attack Joe Walters earned Warrior Offensive Player of the Week and Rochester Rattlers attack Mark Cockerton was named Cascade Rookie of the Week.

This is the first time Flanagan has been honored by MLL with a weekly award, and he also is the first Hounds player this season to earn the recognition. Flanagan led a defense that held the Boston Cannons in check during the game's second half en route to a 15-12 victory. MLL point leader Paul Rabil (42 points in 9 games) was held to just 2 (1g, 1a) against Flanagan in Week 9.

Saturday’s contest started as a close game, with the teams tied at 5 going into halftime. The Cannons pulled ahead 9-6 in the third, but the Hounds put up 8 goals (including a 2-pointer from Mike Sawyer) in the fourth quarter as Flanagan and the defense held the Cannons to just 3 more goals to seal the Hounds’ fourth victory of the year.

Flanagan this year has been a force to reckon with on the faceoff wing, and through 9 games leads all Hounds players with 36 groundballs. That total also is good enough for fourth in the league among all defensemen. Flanagan in 2014 was named to his third-straight MLL All-Star Game.

Rookie award winner Cockerton and his Rattlers (6-3) travel to Charlotte on Saturday, July 5 to face Flanagan and the Hounds (4-5) for the first time this season. The game will be played at American Legion Memorial Stadium with faceoff set for 7:00pm ET, and will include a postgame fireworks show presented by Orleans Homes. Fans can watch on Fox Sports Regional Networks, MSG+ or Tickets are available at or by calling 704-206-1515.
