Hounds Strengthen Core, Add Depth in MLL Collegiate Draft

March 19, 2016
The Charlotte Hounds on Friday night selected 11 players in the 2014 Major League Lacrosse Collegiate Draft, beginning with the seventh overall pick of Maryland defenseman Michael Ehrhardt. In 38 games with the Terrapins, Ehrhardt collected 101 groundballs and caused 40 turnovers. The six-foot-five-inch, 210 pound defender earned USILA second-team All American honors as a junior in 2013.

With their first pick in the second-round, the ninth overall, the Hounds selected short-stick defensive midfielder Pat Laconi out of Loyola-Md. In three seasons with the Greyhounds, Laconi tallied 14 points (5g, 9a), 58 groundballs and caused 41 turnovers.

The Hounds also held the third, sixth and seventh picks in the second round (11th, 14th and 15th overall), which they used on Maryland midfielder Mike Chanenchuk, Duke faceoff specialist Brendan Fowler and Towson attackman/midfielder Thomas DeNapoli.

Chanenchuk spent his freshman season in 2010 at Princeton before transferring to Maryland the following year. In a combined 48 collegiate games, the midfielder accumulated 109 points (69g, 29a) and added 48 groundballs. He was a two-time USILA second-team All American selection. Fowler in three seasons has gone 515-830 (62%) at the X, while adding four goals and two assists for the Blue Devils. The six-foot, 210 pound FOGO was a USILA first-team All American honoree in ’13. DeNapoli in 46 games with the Tigers has tallied 60 goals and 32 assists for a total of 92 points. The offensive threat also scooped up 41 groundballs.

With two picks in the third round, the Hounds selected two attackmen in Duke’s Josh Dionne (18th overall) and Loyola’s Justin Ward (23rd overall). Dionne in 61 games put up 106 points (91g, 15a) and added 70 groundballs. Ward in 43 games also posted 106 points (39g, 67a) with 53 groundballs.

The Hounds rounded out their draft by selecting Duke defenseman Henry Lobb (31st overall) and Chris Hipps (55th overall), as well as midfielders Zack Losco out of UPenn (47th overall) and Kevin O’Neil out of Villanova (63rd overall).

Friday’s Collegiate Draft, the 14th in MLL history, headlined the 2014 US Lacrosse National Convention at the Marriott Liberty Ballroom in Philadelphia. The Ohio Machine opened the draft by selecting Princeton midfielder Tom Schreiber with the first overall pick. All drafted players will be added to a team’s Collegiate Inactive Roster, and can be activated once their NCAA seasons are complete.

Prior to the start of the Draft, the Hounds traded second-year attackman Owen Blye to the Boston Cannons in exchange for a fourth round, natural selection pick in the 2015 MLL Collegiate Draft.
