Zippy Ice Player Spotlight: Peet Poillon

The vast majority of Major League Lacrosse players work full-time jobs Monday through Friday, but that hardly means they treat their commitment to the league as a secondary gig. In order to play at the elite level required in the MLL, guys have to make training and preparation a 24/7/365 responsibility. In the latest installment of the “Zippy Ice Player Spotlight,” Hounds midfielder Peet Poillon talks about what gets him motivated to hit the field every Saturday during the summer.

A typical work week for me…
In the past it’s been a lot of training and club team practices with Low And Away Lacrosse, which has two locations based out of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Lancaster, Pennsylvania. So that’s what it’s typically been since I’ve been in the league - a lot of camps and clinics and club team practices. But this summer it has been helping out with the camps and clinics and tournaments at the University of Delaware in addition to Low And Away throughout the summer. So same kind of stuff, a lot of coaching. I’m coaching kids between the ages of nine and 18.

My workouts leading up to gameday…
I typically will find a time, depending on what the week consists of, either in the morning or in the evening and it’ll be a lot of interval running. So sprint-jog-sprint-jog on the field in between the boxes, just kind of getting my lungs ready for playing offensive sets and getting in matchups on defense. Then a lot of shooting. Shooting workouts consist of probably between 100 and 200 reps. Shots in areas that I’ll typically get opportunities on gameday.

Our team keeps in touch during the week by…
A lot of e-mails go back and forth throughout the week between the team and the coaching staff. Then I’ll typically be on the phone with a few guys once or twice throughout the course of the week just talking about the opponent that we’re playing and what we should be prepared to go over at practice on Friday night.

My gameday routine consists of…
When I get to the stadium I like to be one of the first guys out on the field to get probably 20 shots pretty quickly out on the field just to kind of get my blood flowing. And then I go in the locker room and relax for about a half hour and kind of think about what I’m going to have to do when the game starts.

The gameday superstitions I have are…
I wear ankle socks at practice and in the walk through, then I wear my normal Warrior socks for the game. I don’t know if you can call it a superstition, but it’s something I’ve been doing consistently this season for some reason. And I like to visualize for like ten minutes in the locker room after that initial shoot around on the field.

The best teammate to room with on the road is…
I’m gonna have to go with Matt White. Probably because he’s laid back, likes to just get a nap in and has kind of a similar routine as me. I like to be relaxed on gamedays and not get too excited too early and he’s a pretty relaxed guy. Most of our conversations are fun and he loves the sport and so do I, so we like to talk a little lacrosse on the road in the hotel room.

The best part of playing in the MLL…
I just enjoy playing with and against the best players in the world. I think myself, in addition to the rest of the players in the league, we all kind of take pride in being pioneers for a professional sport that isn’t where it wants to be yet, but is in the process of going in that direction. Hopefully we can look back and see that we played a big part in creating a very successful, big time league where the athletes can play full time and live in the cities where they play and really reap the benefits of the hard work we’re putting in now. In addition to that, it’s just something that I never really thought I’d have the opportunity to do, but as my career progressed I was excited to be able to play at this level. It’s unbelievable to be playing against guys that you’ve looked up to for a very long time.

The impact and influence of the fans on gameday…
The fans are very important. They’re obviously the people that are going to drive the success of the league and so we try to treat them very well in terms of interaction. And it’s very fun to hear the crowd, specifically in Charlotte they’re a pretty invested group in terms of really wanting the team to succeed. That’s fun and it’s motivating and it’s also important to us because it’s going to continue to drive the success of the league and each day we get more and more fans out here.

How I’ve seen the Hounds progress…
Even the first game ever that was played down in Charlotte I was a part of, playing against the Hounds. And you could certainly see the hard work and the effort that was put into the organization by the ownership to put a first class organization together. Since then the team has gotten a lot better, it looks a lot different, we’ve got a lot of rookies in this year. You’d seen a different product on the field pretty regularly up until the last few weeks, and I feel like we’ve really started to put together a consistent crew of guys that are really learning to play well together and thoroughly enjoy playing together, which has been very important. The biggest part of the progression has been the team chemistry off the field and getting a consistent group together. You can see the enjoyment of the guys interacting with one another when we’re playing together during games and during practice.

To finish out the season and make a push for the playoffs…
We need to play a full game, a full 60 minutes and play disciplined, smart, not letting teams go on runs like we have in the past. We certainly have the talent to beat anybody, but when we let teams back in the game, specifically due to things that we can control, it’s frustrating. So I think just controlling the things that we can and playing smart and playing disciplined, that will give us the best chance to win those last three games and play on to Championship Weekend.
