Hounds snap Denver's streak with 18-15 win

Final Stats

The Charlotte Hounds (2-5) defeated the Denver Outlaws (5-1) 18-15 on Saturday evening at Memorial Stadium in Charlotte, NC, ending the Outlaws MLL record 25 consecutive regular season game winning streak.

The Hounds got off to a strong start at both ends of the field and were able to outlast an Outlaws’ offense that entered the game leading the MLL in nearly every offensive category. The Hounds defense held the Outlaws to a single goal in the 1st quarter. It was the first time in the 2014 season that Denver failed to score 3 or more goals in the 1st  frame.

Outlaws Goalie, Charlie Cirpriano made his first career start to replace injured reigning Goalie of the Year, Jesse Schwartzman. Cirpiano was kept busy by the Hounds offense that fired 30 shots on goal.

The surging Hounds offense was led by Captain Matt Danowski, John Haus, and Ryan Young each scoring three goals.  Young’s first goal extended his point-scoring streak to 23 consecutive games.

Hounds rookie Mike Chanenchuk scored his first career MLL goal on a dodge from the top of the arch down the right side. Chanechuk, the 11th overall selection in the 2014 Collegiate Draft, was making his MLL debut and finished with 2 goals.

Curtis Dickson was the offensive answer for the Outlaws, who were missing John Grant Jr. at Attack. Dickson used his speed to beat Hounds defenders all evening and ended the game with 5 points (4g, 1a).

The Outlaws were able to capitalize on scoring opportunities in transition to beat Hounds defenders, who appeared unorganized at times throughout the game. Jeremy Sieverts and Drew Snider each scored three goals to propel the Outlaws offense, including one 2-point score from Sieverts on the man advantage. He now leads the MLL with four 2-point goals this season.

However, uncharacteristic turnovers hampered the Outlaws offense and gave the Hounds an advantage in time of possession and allowed the Hounds to control the pace of play.

Eight different Hounds players scored goals, including a blast from beyond the 2pt arc by long pole Mason Poli that gave the Hounds the 14-13 lead.

Poli scooped up the groundball off the faceoff, ran uncontested down the field and hit the top left corner of the goal with his shot. The goal came just 23 seconds after the Outlaws had taken the lead in the 4th quarter and appeared to be gaining control of the game.

The Hounds would not relinquish the lead and closed out the quarter with 6 goals to silence the Outlaws and end the longest  regular season winning streak in MLL history at 25 games.
