Hounds Remain Winless On The Road With Loss To Lizards

The Charlotte Hounds remain winless on the road in 2014 after dropping a 14-12 decision to the New York Lizards on Saturday night. Lizards attack Rob Pannell was named Coca-Cola Player of the Game for a six-goal performance. Meanwhile, the Hounds were led by John Haus, who had three goals and one assist. The game was played in front of 5,046 fans at James. M Shuart Stadium in Hempstead, N.Y.

The Hounds opened the game with two straight goals, as Mike Sawyer found Ryan Young on the doorstep and three minutes later Haus dished to Tom DeNapoli for an early 2-0 advantage. But the Lizards scored the next three straight, including two from Pannell and a 2-pointer from Max Seibald to take a 3-2 lead. It was the Lizards’ first 2-point goal of the season. But Young stopped the run with his second of the night on a wrap-around shot after a pass from Matt Danowski to cut the Lizards’ lead down to two at the end of the quarter.

Sawyer scored his first of the night 3:18 into the second quarter, and Haus tallied the equalizer just 40 seconds later. The teams then traded goals, including the third of the night for Pannell and first for Justin Ward, to keep the game knotted at 6 apiece. But with 25 seconds left in the half, Danowski got a step ahead of his defender and scored a highlight-reel worthy behind-the-back goal to give the Hounds a 7-6 advantage going into the break. It was the 150th goal of Danowski’s career, including the postseason.

The first 3:47 of the third went scoreless before Seibald scored his second 2-pointer of the night, reclaiming an 8-7 lead for the Lizards. Less than two minutes later, Pannell got a shot off as he was knocked to the ground and it took an unfortunate bounce past Hounds goaltender Adam Ghitelman to push the Lizards’ advantage to two. The next five minutes went scoreless before Sawyer tallied his second of the night to pull the Hounds within one. The teams then traded goals – included the fifth of the night for Pannell and second for Haus – to make it a 10-9 game going into the final quarter.

Momentum went in favor of the Lizards at the start of the fourth, as the team scored four-straight goals to pull ahead 14-9 with 6:37 left to play. The Hounds wouldn’t go down without a fight, though, tallying the game’s final three goals to account for the 14-12 final. Ghitelman finished the night with 13 saves on 25 shots, while Drew Adams had 15 saves on 25 shots.

The Hounds (3-5) next week return home to face the Cannons on Saturday, June 28 at American Legion Memorial Stadium. Faceoff is set for 7:00pm ET. The Hounds lost their first matchup with the Cannons 14-6 in Week 4.
