Defending Champion Cannons Prove Too Much For Hounds

The Charlotte Hounds (0-2) traveled to Boston on Saturday night and fell 20-12 to the defending MLL champion Cannons (2-0) in their first away game of the 2012 season. Matt Poskay of the Cannons was named Bud Light Player of the game for his five goals on the night. This was the seventh straight win for the Cannons dating back to the 2011 regular season.

It didn’t take long for the Cannons to strike, as Poskay scored off the opening possession only 16 seconds into the game. Brian Farrell followed a minute-and-a-half later for the early 2-0 lead. The Hounds would respond with two goals of their own, the first from Brian Carroll and then Justin Smith, making his Hounds debut, snuck a pretty shot past Cannons goaltender Jordan Burke. Momentum swung back to the Cannons though, as they closed the quarter with two more goals from Ryan Boyle and Matt Stone for a 4-2 lead.

The Hounds brought the game back within one with a goal from Billy Bitter, but Poskay tallied two in a row for the Cannons to pull ahead 6-3. The teams traded goals before a holding penalty was called on Ethan Vedder, allowing the Hounds to end the half man-up, and Josh Amidon to sneak a power-play goal past Burke. The Hounds went into halftime with a little momentum, but still down 7-5.

Joe Marra, who made eight saves on 15 shots in the first half for the Hounds, was replaced by Adam Ghitelman to start the third quarter. Marra chipped a bone in his hand during training camp, so the team is trying to avoid further damage and ease him back into the lineup. The Cannons took advantage of the change-up, scoring nine goals to the Hounds’ four. Boston carried a 16-9 lead into the final quarter.

The Hounds were never able to recover from the deficit. Every goal they scored in the fourth, the Cannons were able to match, carrying them to a 20-12 victory. Charlotte was obviously affected on the defensive end by not having Ricky Pages available. Pages was suspended one game for an illegal body check he delivered in the Hounds season opener last week. For the Cannons, Burke had 15 saves and Chris Eck was 23-36 on face-offs.

Currently winless, the Hounds will return home to face the Ohio Machine (0-1) on Saturday, May 12 at American Legion Memorial Stadium.
