Hounds Earn First Win, Edge Machine 18-15

The Charlotte Hounds (1-2) earned their first ever franchise victory on Saturday, edging fellow expansion team the Ohio Machine 18-15 in front of a home crowd of 4,782 at American Legion Memorial Stadium. Josh Amidon was named Bud Light Player of the Game for a six (6) point performance. He scored three goals, including his first career 2-pointer, and added two assists. The Machine (0-2) remain winless.

The battle began with the teams trading three goal runs. The Machine got the early lead as Connor Martin scored on the man-up opportunity, followed by goals from midfielders Brett Garber and Matt Lalli. Momentum shifted to the Hounds as Kyle Wimer came from behind the cage and crease dived to get the ball past Machine goaltender Stefan Schroder. Justin Smith and Matt Danowski each added a goal from just inside the arc to tie things up 3-3. The Machine pulled back ahead as Kyle Hartzell ripped a 2-pointer in transition for the 5-3 lead. Each team would tack on another goal to end the first with the Machine up 6-4.

The Hounds took control of the second quarter, scoring five straight goals before the Machine’s Chazz Woodson finally found the back of the net with 16.6 seconds remaining. Hounds goaltender Joe Marra made five saves to keep the Hounds ahead 9-7 heading into halftime.

Brian Phipps started the second half in goal for the Machine, and the change seemed to spark Ohio as they scored two quick goals to tie the game 9-9. The Hounds responded with back-to-back 2-point goals, one from team point leader Stephen Berger and the other Amidon. Brian Carroll notched his second of the game and the Hounds saw their lead grow to 14-9 halfway through the third quarter.

Martin would score two in a row to get things rolling for the Machine again. Matt Messina followed with a crease dive goal to bring the Hounds lead down to 14-12. Marra, who’s nursing a hand injury, was hit on the play and had to leave the game, forcing the Hounds to bring in backup Adam Ghitelman. Ghitelman allowed in the first shot he saw, and the Machine was back within one at the end of the third.

More than five minutes ticked by in the fourth before Woodson scored his third of the game, and the Machine’s fifth straight to tie things up 14-14. The run was ended by Jeremy Boltus, who scored on the man-up after the Machine’s Matt Casey was hit with an illegal equipment penalty. An illegal body check penalty immediately followed for the Machine, and the Hounds got a 6-on-4 advantage. Carroll capitalized and scored his third of the game. Two more goals followed for the Hounds before Lalli snuck one last Machine goal in with 1.6 seconds on the clock, making the final score 18-15. Ghitelman made six saves in the winning effort.

The Hounds continue a three-game home stand next week when they face the Long Island Lizards (0-2).
