Late Rally by Hounds Falls Short, Lose 10-9 to Lizards

A four goal, fourth quarter rally by the Charlotte Hounds (1-3) fell just short Saturday night, as the team lost 10-9 to the Long Island Lizards (1-2) in front of 3,548 fans at American Legion Memorial Stadium. The Lizards’ Ryan Young was named Bud Light Player of the Game for his four goal performance in the team’s first win of the season.

The game was scoreless for over four minutes before Josh Amidon got a feed from Justin Smith to put the Hounds on the board first. Another nine minutes would go by before the Lizards’ Brian Langtry worked from behind the cage and scored off a crease dive to tie it up 1-1. Long Island got its first goal from Young to end the quarter with a 2-1 advantage.

Shortly into the start of the second quarter, Jeremy Boltus took advantage of a Hounds’ man-up opportunity and tied the game 2-2. The Lizards responded with two more goals of their own to reclaim the lead 4-2. Stephen Berger cut the deficit back to one as he was able to get a shot off and score in the midst of falling to the grass. A behind the back goal from Langtry put the Lizards up 5-3 before Matt Danowski took control of a long possession, settling behind the cage before coming around the right side and dumping the ball to the back of the net, cutting the lead to 5-4 Long Island. The final six minutes of the half went scoreless.

Joe Marra, who had eight saves in the first half, was pulled during halftime due to nagging injuries. Coming off the bench, Adam Ghitelman allowed in the first shot he saw, a rocket from Grant Catalino to put the Lizards up 6-4. The Lizards scored another three straight goals, including back-to-backs from Young, to finish the third quarter with a 9-4 advantage. Drew Adams made six saves to hold the Hounds scoreless in the quarter.

The drought was finally ended a minute-and-a-half into the fourth, as Smith fired a shot that went straight to the back of the net. Young added his fourth goal, and ultimately the Lizards final goal, with 11:31 left in the quarter. But the 10-5 deficit proved to be just too much for the Hounds to overcome. Charlotte did mount the start of a comeback, scoring four unanswered goals in three minutes at the end of the quarter, but their rally fell just short as the Lizards got the final possession of the game to close out the 10-9 win.

The Lizards were the better team at the face-off X (14-23) and in the ground ball game (32 to the Hounds 25). They were also anchored by 17 saves from Adams. The Lizards host the Ohio Machine next on May 31, while the Hounds host the Hamilton Nationals on June 2.
