The Charlotte Hounds have acquired 2012 NCAA Champion and tournament Most Outstanding Player Eric Lusby (Loyola-Maryland) through the Major League Lacrosse waiver wire process. Teams had the opportunity to place waiver claims on any college player not drafted in January’s 2012 MLL Collegiate Draft and who registered for the MLL Player pool between May 31 and June 6. The Hounds were able to place the first claim, as the order of the waiver wire was determined by current league standings, in which the Hounds rank eighth.
“It has always been something I have wanted to do, play professional lacrosse and with the best players everywhere,” Lusby said through a release from the Loyola Athletic Department.
The attackman led Loyola to its first-ever national lacrosse title and set an NCAA Championship record by scoring 17 goals in four tournament games. Four of his goals came in the title game against the Maryland Terrapins on May 28. As well as earning the Most Outstanding Player honors, Lusby’s NCAA Tournament performance also pushed him past teammate Mike Sawyer for the Greyhounds’ season scoring title. Lusby finished the season with 54 goals and added 17 assists for a total of 71 points.
The Severna Park, Md.-native went undrafted in January as he was coming off a 2011 season in which he sat out because of a torn ACL. The 2012 Collegiate Draft was the second straight year MLL has held the event prior to the start of the NCAA season.
Players acquired through the MLL waiver wire process will be eligible to play beginning in Week 7 of the 2012 season. For the Hounds that is a June 16 home game against the Boston Cannons. Tickets for the game are still available.
