Cannons Hand Hounds Fourth Straight Loss

The Charlotte Hounds dropped their fourth straight game, a 16-8 loss to the Boston Cannons Saturday night, in front of a record crowd of 7,034 at American Legion Memorial Stadium in Charlotte. Cannons goalie Jordan Burke was named Bud Light Player of the game for making 16 saves on 22 shots.

For the first time since Week 4, the Hounds were the first team to get on the board. Jovan Miller from behind the cage found Billy Bitter for a quick strike past Burke and an early 1-0 lead. However, Kevin Buchanan would score back-to-back goals for the Cannons to end the first quarter with a 2-1 advantage.

The teams traded goals at the start of the second before longpole Ricky Pages recovered a loose ground ball for the Hounds and put it past Burke to tie the game at 3-3. The Cannons then tallied two in a row, one from Ryan Boyle and the other from Chris Eck directly off his faceoff win, for a 5-3 lead going into halftime.

The Cannons began the third quarter with a four goal run, including three straight from Matt Poskay, to extend their lead to 9-3 within the first four minutes. The quarter would go scoreless for the next 11 minutes, until Jeremy Boltus got a feed from Matt Danowski with less than a second remaining to net his second goal of the game. The Cannons, however, would still carry the 9-4 advantage into the fourth quarter.

That lead was extended to 15-4 after the Cannons began the final quarter with a five goal run, including another set of back-to-backs from Poskay and a 2-pointer from Paul Rabil. The Hounds finally responded with 4:34 to play, as Stephen Berger ripped a 2-pointer of his own to bring the score to 15-6. Boyle would tack on another for the Cannons before Danowski added a second Hounds 2-pointer to end the game at 16-8.

The Hounds (1-6) will travel to Columbus, Ohio on June 23 for a rematch with the Machine. Charlotte’s only win this season came against the Machine, 18-15, in Week 3. Ohio also is in the midst of a losing streak, having dropped three straight of their own to fall to 1-5 on the season. The game will be played at Selby Stadium and faceoff is set for 7pm.
