The Charlotte Hounds dropped their second straight road game, falling 14-5 to the Rochester Rattlers in front of 3,365 fans at Sahlen’s Stadium in Rochester, NY. Rattlers midfielder Matt Striebel was named Bud Light Player of the Game for his 4 point (2g, 2a) performance. This also was Striebel’s 133rd career MLL game, which sets a new league record for games played.
The Rattlers struck first with back-to-back goals from Kevin Leveille and Striebel to take an early 2-0 lead. However, the Hounds responded with two goals of their own from Matt Danowski and Brian Carroll to end the first quarter in a 2-2 tie.
The second quarter was dominated by the Rattlers, who scored four straight goals, including two from Roy Lang, to take a 6-2 advantage. The Hounds finally stopped the run with 34.9 seconds remaining in the half, as Stephen Berger ripped a shot past Rattlers goalie John Galloway. Berger’s toe was just over the 2-point line, so the Rattlers carried a 6-3 advantage into the half.
Momentum stayed with the Hounds briefly, as Billy Bitter scored just over a minute into the third to cut the Rattlers lead to 6-4. But Jovan Miller was called for a slashing penalty, and Striebel tallied his second of the night on the man-up opportunity to make it 7-4 Rattlers. The Rattlers then scored another three goals straight, including Leveille and Brad Ross’ seconds of the night, to extend their lead to 10-4 with 5:09 left to play in the third. Jerry Ragonese won the ensuing faceoff for the Hounds and dished the ball to Berger, who got double-teamed, and with nowhere to go dumped the ball to Carroll who scored his second of the night to cut the Rattlers lead to 10-5.
However, the Rattlers would end the game with another four goal run. Two more scores came in the third from Steven Boyle and Ned Crotty to end the quarter with a 12-5 Rattlers advantage. Tim Fallon then won the starting faceoff in the fourth quarter, and passed to Boyle who scored his second of the night. The game’s final goal came from Steve DeNapoli, solidifying the 14-5 win for the Rattlers.
The Hounds (3-8) remain on the road for another two weeks, next facing the Lizards at James M. Shuart Stadium in Long Island on July 28. The teams first met in Charlotte, Week 4, when the Lizards edged out the Hounds 10-9.
