Hounds Come Up Short Against Lizards

The Charlotte Hounds lost their third straight road game Saturday night, falling 13-9 to the Long Island Lizards in front of a crowd of 1,873 at James M. Shuart Stadium in Hempstead, NY. Lizards midfielder Brian Langtry was named Bud Light Player of the Game for his three goal performance.

The Hounds jumped out to an early lead, started by a highlight reel Jovan Miller goal from behind the net. Matt Danowski scored on the run and Billy Bitter grabbed a rebound to put up a 3-0 lead less than five minutes into the game. The Lizards responded with back-to-back goals of their own. Matt Gibson scored on the crease dive and Langtry on the man-up got to cut the Hounds lead to 3-2. However, the Hounds regained momentum as rookie attackman Eric Lusby made his MLL debut and scored his first career goal to give the Hounds a 4-2 advantage at the end of the quarter.

Offense continued to roll for the Hounds  in the seond quarter as Jerry Ragonese won the initial faceoff and long pole Ricky Pages came off the wing and straight downfield to score. Stephen Berger added a crease dive goal to extend the Hounds lead to 6-2. However, the next two goals would go to the Lizards. Stephen Peyser ripped a jump shot from just inside the arc and Grant Catalino scored off a rebound to pull to the score to 6-4. The Hounds would get another goal from Bitter, but the Lizards tallied two more of their own -- a low shot by Will Managan and Gibson’s second of the night, a power-play goal -- to cut the Hounds lead to 7-6 at the end of the half.

The third quarter also began with a Hounds faceoff win, and this time it was Brian Carroll who capitalized to push the Hounds lead to 8-6. The game then went scoreless for almost 10 minutes before Langtry tallied back-to-back goals, including another on man-up, to complete a hat-trick and tie the game up 8-8 heading into the final quarter.

Momentum stayed with the Lizards going into the fourth, and they scored five of the quarter’s six goals. Greg Gurenlian gave the Lizards their first lead of the game by scoring off the faceoff, and Max Seibald tallied back-to-backs to extend that lead to 11-8. The lone Hounds goal was scored by Kevin Kaminski with 8:46 left in the game. That was enough time for the Lizards to tack on two more goals from Tommy Palasek and Catalino to secure the 13-9 victory. They are now 8-4 on the season.

Hounds attackman Jeremy Boltus was injured in the second quarter and did not return to the game. Boltus was chasing a defender, slipped and tweaked something in his right knee. The extent of the injury will not be known until he is able to get an MRI.

The Hounds (3-9) remain on the road for another week, traveling to Hamilton, Ontario for the first time in franchise history to face the Nationals (3-9) on Aug. 4 at Ron Joyce Stadium.
