Hounds End Road Skid, Beat Nationals 11-9 In Hamilton

The Charlotte Hounds ended their three game road skid Saturday night, beating the Hamilton Nationals 11-9 at Ron Joyce Stadium in Hamilton, Ontario. Hounds goaltender Adam Ghitelman was named Bud Light Player of the Game for his 18 save performance.

For the second week in a row, the Hounds were the first team to get on the board. Kevin Kaminski took a shot on the run that bounced passed Nationals goalie Brett Queener for the 1-0 advantage just under three minutes into the game. Cody Jamieson of the Nationals tied it up 20 seconds later, but Stephen Berger responded with a goal from just inside the 2-point arc to take back the lead 2-1. However, with 7:47 left to play in the quarter, lightning and thunder struck in the area forcing the game to go into a weather delay. The break didn’t seem to affect the Hounds too much though, as they scored three straight goals after returning to action, including the second of the night from Kaminski, to finish the first quarter with a 5-1 lead.

The Hounds kept it rolling to start the second, with back-to-back goals from Jovan Miller and Berger to extend their lead to 7-1. However, the Nationals took over control, closing the quarter with three straight goals of their own, the third of which was credited as a 2-pointer. David Earl tried to make a pass from just beyond the 2-point arc and Joe Cinosky tried to intercept, but rather the ball bounced off Cinosky’s stick and into the back of the net. That left the Hounds with just a 7-5 lead going into the half.

The teams traded goals in the third quarter, starting with Stephen Keogh’s second of the night, another low shot past Ghitelman, to make it 7-6. That was followed by the Hounds’ Joe Vitale and Nationals’ Roman Lao-Gosney each scoring the first goal of their respective MLL careers to end the quarter with an 8-7 Hounds advantage.

The fourth quarter began with back-to-back goals by Kyle Wimer, who was playing in his first game since suffering a broken thumb Week 3, to put the Hounds back up 10-7. The teams traded goals to finish the game, and while the Nationals’ Keogh had the final tally and completed the hattrick, it was the Hounds who came out on top, winning the game 11-9.

The Hounds (4-9) next week will close out their inaugural season at home, facing the Rattlers (7-6) on Aug. 11 at American Legion Memorial Stadium. The first time these teams met Week 11 in Rochester, the Rattlers came away with a 14-5 victory.
