Major League Lacrosse today announced its weekly award winners for Week 4 of the 2013 season, naming Charlotte Hounds attack Mike Sawyer (Loyola-Md.) Cascade Rookie of the Week. The winners are chosen by MLL Commissioner David Gross and are based on outstanding in-game achievements. In addition to Sawyer’s honor, the MLL named Boston Cannons attack Ryan Boyle Offensive Player of the Week and Denver Outlaws long stick Lee Zink Defensive Player of the Week.
Sawyer made his MLL debut on Friday morning against the Hamilton Nationals in Ontario, following Loyola’s exit from the 2013 NCAA men’s lacrosse tournament. The Charlotte native compiled three points in the contest, scoring his first MLL goal and adding two assists. Both of his assists went to midfielder Jovan Miller, while Sawyer got his helper from former Loyola teammate Eric Lusby. The attackman's three points lead all rookies thus far. His performance was a bright spot in the Hounds’ eventual 16-15 overtime loss to the Nationals.
In four years at Loyola, Sawyer racked up 154 points on 128 goals plus 26 assists, as well as played a key role in the Greyhounds’ run to a national title in 2012. That same season he was a Tewaaraton Award finalist and earned USILA All-America Second Team honors in addition to All-ECAC First Team and ECAC All-Championships Team. The Hounds drafted Sawyer eighth overall in the 2013 MLL Collegiate Draft, held on January 11, prior to the start of the 2013 NCAA season.
"Mike will make tremendous impact on the Hounds offense moving forward," said coach Mike Cerino. "It will be an exciting time in Charlotte when their favorite lacrosse son returns home in June." The Hounds (1-3) are on a bye this week in observance of the Memorial Day holiday, so Sawyer and the team will be back in action again on May 31 when they travel to New York to face the Lizards (2-2) in a Friday night match up. The Hounds then return home on June 8 to face the Ohio Machine (0-3) at American Legion Memorial Stadium.
