The Hounds have appointed veteran players Matt Danowski and Adam Ghitelman team captains for the ’14 season. Both served in the same roles last year, as the Hounds made an unexpected run to the MLL Championship, and have been with the team since its inception to the league in 2012. The decision was made collectively between the Hounds’ coaching staff, General Manager and core players.
After missing the Hounds’ 2013 season opener due to a coaching commitment, Ghitelman stepped in as the team’s full-time starting goaltender in Week 2 and earned a 7-6 record during the regular season. He finished the year with a 12.1 goals against average -- a new personal best -- and 49.7 save percentage. However, the goaltender was at his best in the postseason, improving to a 12.0 GAA and 52.0 SV%. Ghitelman isn’t afraid to run with the ball, and even recorded a goal and two assists during the 2013 season. He is the key voice for the team on the defensive end of the field.
Danowski, a six-year MLL veteran, has become the cornerstone to the Hounds’ offense. The attackman had a career-year in 2013, posting personal bests in goals (33) and points (49). Danowski led the Hounds in both those offensive categories and also finished fourth overall in the league for both, despite playing in two less games than the top three scorers. Of Danowski’s 33 goals in 2013, six were 2-point tallies, which ranked second in the MLL. Another notable improvement for Danowksi last season was increasing his shot-on-goal percentage from a career-low 16.5% in 2012 to a career-high 26.6% in 2013. He isn’t afraid to put the team on his back, and is at his best when the game comes down to the wire.
Both Ghitelman and Danowski credit their leadership skills to their jobs as college coaches. Ghitelman joined the Harvard men’s lacrosse staff in 2012, while Danowski has been coaching under his father, John, at Duke for the past three years.
The Hounds open the season at American Legion Memorial Stadium in Charlotte on Saturday, April 26. The game, which will be played against the Ohio Machine, begins at 7:00pm ET. Tickets are available by calling 704-206-1515 or visiting charlottehounds.com/tickets
