Major League Lacrosse today announced the 24 players selected to participate in the 2014 MLL All-Star Game on Thursday, June 26 at historic Harvard Stadium in Boston, Mass. The Hounds will be represented by four players, including attack Matt Danowski, midfielder Kevin Drew and defensemen Ryan Flanagan and Brett Schmidt. Participants are selected through a balloting process by the coaches and general managers from each of the league’s eight teams.
This year marks the fifth overall All-Star selection for Danowski, the Hounds’ cornerstone player since the team’s inaugural season and leading scorer from 2013. Danowski said he is “honored and humbled” to be a part of the All-Star experience again and is looking forward to “the competition and playing with some of the world’s best talent.” In just four games this season, the captain has managed to put up nine points on seven goals (including one 2-pointer) and one assist. He has spent time early in the year running more in the midfield, which further proves his versatility as a player and expansive lacrosse IQ. Danowski also was the first runner up in the 2013 Warrior MVP race.
The 2014 All-Star selection is a first for Drew, who has been in the league since 2012 and with the Hounds since 2013. The D-middie has been a key factor in improving transition play and brings and aggressiveness to the faceoff wing. He has registered 10 groundballs in six games this season.
Flanagan in his third MLL season – all with the Hounds – also will be making his third-straight All-Star appearance. “The MLL is home to the best lacrosse players in the world, and the league is as competitive as it has ever been,” said Flanagan. “To even be in the conversation with some of the best players in the world is truly an honor.” The long pole has been exceptional on the faceoff wing this year, and leads the team with 25 groundballs. His GB tally ranks ninth overall in the league, and fourth among defenders.
Meanwhile, this is the second straight All-Star selection for Schmidt, who has taken on a larger leadership role within the Hounds’ close defense this season. The fourth-year player has collected 12 groundballs and tallied a 2-point goal so far in six games.
The 2014 MLL All-Star Game will feature Team MLL vs. Team USA, a format last used in 2010. Flanagan said the opportunity to face the U.S. squad is “no doubt” what he is most looking forward to. “You have some of the best lacrosse players in the world on the field together in what is going to be a very competitive game,” he said. “Fans get an opportunity to not just see a very high level of lacrosse, but as always with the MLL, the opportunity to meet and interact with all of the players.” Danowski added, “The MLL players do such a great job interacting with the fans. It’s truly an experience unlike any other in sports.”
The MLL All-Star team will be coached by Bayhawks head coach
Dave Cottle, with Lizards head coach
Joe Spallina serving as his assistant. Meanwhile, Team USA is coached by
Richie Meade of Furman University. In addition to the game, several All Stars - to be announced at a later date - also will participate in the Half-Time Skills Competition, which will include Fastest Shot, Accuracy and Freestyle contests.
